Second hand smoke killed the Turkey!

So I was playing in a poker tournament couple days prior to this years 10K Turkey Trot.  Didn’t think several hours of 2nd hand smoking could really do anything to me.  Wednesday night I ate well and slept well.  Thursday was the race day!  I was ready to kill it!  Woke up headed to the starting line and as I started running I noticed I was gasping for air.  I felt like this was my first run in a long while.  I can only think of those pocket kings that kept me in the poker tournmanet.  Oddly I felt super great after the race which lead me to do another fun 5K loop.  Ok so better planning next time!  :)

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Norcal Tough Mudder 2011 Review

Great job to Tough Mudder crew for putting together a great course!  12 miles and 20 obstacles!!   It was so tough I started laughing every time I started feeling over worked.  The 1st 7 miles is a brutal 2300 feet climb.  You start off crawling in a mud pit under barb wires.  I don’t want to really mention the 1st two obstacles cause they were kind of a joke.  Marines throwing swiss balls at you and a small hill climb.  But heading right into the death march with muddy shoes was the wakening that you are in the tough mudder!  The 3 obstacles that got to me was the 2nd log carry, the plank swim, and the Chernobyl Jacuzzi.  The 1st log carry was easy.  Didn’t have to carry the log too far.  The 2nd log carry was right before we reached the top of the mountain.  At this point, I was pretty exhausted from just the run.  And to carry the log up the rest of the hill did challenge my fitness level.  And as a guy, you can’t just pick up the little logs.  So here I go with a decent size log.  The plank swim was hard cause the lake you jump into was below cold.  Plus you have so many people around you, it feels like the scene from Titanic.  The Chernobyl Jacuzzi is no joke.  you have a tub full of ice and mud water up to your chest.  Then dip under a wooden wall to pass through.  Your toes and hands will be frozen for the next few miles, which made my monkey bars tough.

My advice  for future Tough mudder participants is to sign up for early start times.  They don’t time you so even if you’re scheduled for a later time, you can still start earlier.  if you start later after 9amish, you are going to be backed up on a lot of the obstacles.  Like the Everest, you’ll have to wait about 20 minutes to reach the pipe.  Plus it gets really dusty if you have a lot of runners infront of you.

According to the official, Norcal course has the highest climb compared to the other ones.  They are creating one in Vegas next year.  Perhaps, that will be my next Tough Mudder!

SF Giants 10K Race Review

Few days ago, Ann asked if I’m interested in running this race since her daughter wasn’t able to make it.  Honestly, I haven’t even heard of it.  Since last week’s poor run that I did in Felton, this was my chance to redeem myself!  One of the problems I had last week was fueling up well before the race.  I had a hard time taking any food in which caused me to have low energy.  So this time, I woke up extra early to make sure I was able to eat properly.  Since it was in SF, I had a little bit extra time to eat in the car drive.  The course was flat with great SF wharf scenery.  Finished around 45min 35sec.  I felt great about my run and time.  I know I’m getting back to where I was before my neck injury.

This race starts and finishes at the ATT park.  Pretty cool to cross home plate at the finish.  Since I was wearing my Ann’s daughter’s bib, I had to cover it with my hand acting like I had a cramp.  They were announcing everyone’s name and city that was coming in.  the course is well marked with big flags marking the miles.  Plus ton of volunteers and police trafficing.  After the race, you walk around collecting all your goodies (t-shirt, metal, bobble heads, drinks, etc).  Overall this was a great fun race.  I’m definitely coming back next year.  Thanks to Ann for introducing the race.  Her and Maria did the half marathon.  Great job girls!!
